Exactly. You may be more persistent than I -- not sure I can finish it.

Hi Ken,

I'm about 1/3 of the way through it and completely agree. I'd almost have preferred a simple critical analysis of the work than her over-dramatic perspective on the 1700's. I think its even more annoying when the author draws in her own relationship's biography. I'm going to finish it just because the works and Mrs. D. intrigue me.

I did not know about this compelling publication and am most grateful for your post! Ordering a copy today. Thank you cory!

Another interesting precursor to collage  is Thomas Jefferson's 1820 Bible, in which he cut passages out of two separate bibles to form a personal version of the life if J.C. to form what is essentially a bound, collage publication.  An online view of the full work can be seen here:

Smithsonian puts out a facsimile edition publication whhich can be found at their store, as well as at Amazon. Here is the smithsonian's display:

cool. thanks for sharing. Jefferson was always on the cutting edge (no pun intended)

Cory,

Did you finish Paper Garden?

I finally gave up reading and just looked at the pictures.

Hi Ken,

Yes, I finished a few days ago. It was pretty much the same the rest of the way through, though I was/am still interested in Mrs. D's life. Mostly it makes me want to see the 985 collages in person. I don't, however, think I'll be seeking out any more of the author's work to read.

Hi Cory,

My copy of A Humument  just showed up -- the fifth edition. My first impression is that it's a captivating book with lots of surreal or maybe Dada-esque moments. I don't think I'll be able to go through it page-by-page, however.
I'm eager to hear what you think of it.

I just ordered it as well. It does sound VERY interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Gentlemen.

Addendum: After spending a little more time with A Humument, I think maybe it is possible to go through page-by-page, contrary to my initial impression. I'm not sure but I think characters are starting to emerge.

Hi Ken,

Cool, I'm looking forward to receiving my copy. They tell me it should arrive the first week of June. Keep me posted on what you think and I'll let you know my thoughts when it arrives. Hope all is well in the City of Light.

Thanks for the tip - it looks to be a FASCINATING book!  :D
