I first encountered Ed Kienholz's State Hospital in my Janson's History of Art. It riveted my attention for its stark portrayal of mental illness. After I began creating assemblages, I appreciated Kienholz's work as inspiration. I found this strange little doll at a thrift shop, and its flexibility led me to create this facsimile on a very small scale. The small bottles contain red, yellow and blue pigment, indicating that Kienholz was one of my first inspirations.
