I spent 20 years working in the country's largest children's museum. The collection was encyclopedic, and included natural science/history specimens. I became familiar with riker mounts, and even received a few vintage riker mount boxes, which I have used for assemblages. This piece is reminiscent of those boxes, including the real butterfly. The figure is the same little dead girl depicted in Cabinet Card.
