Two Latest Projects of different stripes (Sound vs. Mixed Media)

Sometimes I really stop and scratch my head over what I do with my time.

Definitive and iconic is Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" and its words first published as a poem by teacher Abel Meeropol. When attempting to interpret all another poet/singer can hope to do is pay respect to the originators while also hoping to bring the same emotional integrity. It is August 2015 as I write this. It was 1937 when the poem was first published. Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a world where…

Montage Guilt

In many ways I feel strange/inadequate, like an imposter, for continuing to participate on this site when much of my work in the past couple of years has become more about montage than collage. At the start of the year, having become obsessed with doing a piece on Alan Turing (which turned into roughly 300 images), I wrote this: "...as I continue to get older and work a day job, montages have become a way of compacting creative energy while my time on earth remains a mystery. I like the idea…

Self-Curate Your Collage Images

Some of you are probably wondering why not all of the images you've uploaded have been posted. We've recently had a tremendous number of new images uploaded so please review the guidelines below, necessary because this is a group site for the global collage community with fairly limited resources...

Please put a representative group of your works on the site and then, for vast numbers of images, put them on flickr, your website, or another image archive. You can then link to the more…

Fund raising campaign

I'm producing work for my first solo show in San Francisco this coming July (for three months). I'm very excited to do this, however, moving work there from Portland and back, plus production is costly. So I've started a funding campaign at www.hatchfund.org/project/in_and_out

If you get a moment, take a look at the video a friend of mine in San Francisco put together for me. If anyone here can pass this along to fellow artists…

Conversation on Sound Collage with Alina Oswald, Art & Understanding Magazine

http://aumag.org/wordpress/2015/04/15/stephen-mead/

Some paint with light. Others use words. Stephen Mead does both. A multimedia artist and author known for his color collages and poems, Mead recently added music and sound to give new life to his work. The result is his new CD, Threnody for a Forgotten Plague, a collection of sung poems of lament dealing with the pain, suffering and loss brought by the early days of…

Help Us Beta Test

Hi All,

We're starting to work on having stuff for sale for raising funds to operate the museum programs (this website included that costs about 250.00 a year) The rents are expensive in Santa Fe and we have a pretty big space, about 2,000 square feet housing and exhibiting the archives containing thousands and thousands of works. The cost is about 2,500.00 a month out of pocket for rent, utilities, internet, etc. (Not very sustainable out of my own pocket.) We'll be running the…

Sound Collage for WORLD AIDS DAY 2014

https://soundcloud.com/stephenmeadart/researching-plague-threnody-take-1

From a work-in-progress, "Threnody for a Forgotten Plague", work concerned with the early days of the AIDS pandemic. "Researching Plague" is one of the more particularly experimental pieces of the series, dealing with the fracturing of voices which occurs during such an outbreak: the medical, political bureaucracy vs. the…

Collage versus colagem

(...) O conceito de colagem, a collage, foi pensado

durante o século XX por Max Ernst, ao qual aderiram muitos artistas

ligados a vários movimentos e principalmente ao surrealismo.

Durante o período pós-guerra,esses movimentos continuaram a existir

e certamente estão hoje misturados de alguma forma com manifestações

artísticas atuais, nas quais, nesse caso a…
