Some of you may be wondering why not all of the images that you've uploaded have been posted. Please review the guidelines below, necessary because this is a group site for the global collage community with fairly limited resources...

Please put a representative group of your works on the site and then, for vast numbers of images, put them on flickr, your website, or another image archive. You can then link to the more of your images from your profile page or even on the description of the images on collagist.org. Try to keep your portfolio at somewhere around 25 images.

Once you have 25 or so works on the site, prune down to your favorite ones when adding new images. Please keep images at around 100kb or less. It is also best to upload a few at a time so that they are dispersed in the image bank/slide show.

Thanks -- and please DO keep adding your latest works! Happy gluing.

I see this as an ongoing series as I learn of new stories and imagine either gathering them on a website such as Weebly or published through CreateSpace, but I am open to ideas as to what presentation platform might work best. I will of course also gladly share jpegs of what images I create with those thoughtful and generous enough to offer their stories. Let us light a candle from one to another against all forms of hate and brutality."

Please feel free to share this with your networks, even if like me, they are more through Pony Express than Twitter.

When I first attempted posting these it was via embedding, and I had no idea how much space these would take up here on this Ning site. I'm still not particularly savvy when it comes to things such as MB vs. KB etc., but given the fact that combined, these collage-films of various montages and mixed media as "stills" numbers close to 500, light dawned on Marblehead again. Thank you Janice for your tip and your patience.

Hi, all --

More people are documenting their work with video these days but it takes up a lot of space when posted directly to this site. Consider posting your videos to YouTube or Vimeo, then giving us some info and a link instead.

Over a decade ago I finished a yearlong art project in which I did an assemblage every week for a year. It was a visual diary and each assemblage was created using found objects and ephemera that were saved from the days prior. The project had the lackluster title of 52 Weeks and it's documented on my website here: http://www.anti-product.com/52-weeks.html…

All these years later this was still the most meaningful of any art project I've done and I'm going to be revisiting it this year. Soon. In the coming months.

The original project was just my best friend and I doing it and this time we're extending the invitation to other artists to have a go at the project too. There is a Facebook group for the new project and it has a lot of the info and news on the state of things. You're welcome to join there too: www.facebook.com/groups/53Weeks

Doing a project like this is nearly impossible to complete all by yourself and having others to serve as inspiration and provide encouragement/accountability is critical and cool.

The start date looks to be in a month or so as we get the boxes issues straightened out.

Certainly we the undersigned respect and revere the old guard artists of the Readymade, Collage, Assemblage and Combine genres such as Marcel Duchamp, Picasso, George Braque, Kurt Schwitters, Louis Nevelson, Joseph Cornel, Juan Gris, Robert Rauschenberg, George Hermes, Wallace Berman, Connor Everts, etc., but it amounts to an act of meaningless kitsch for a contemporary artist to endlessly emulate the work of any of the above-mentioned artists and/or their peers in this, the 21st Century. We believe that by association the above practice taints the names of the legitimate and innovative artists that work under the banner of contemporary Found Object Art. Our mission is to resuscitate and redeem the pathetic state of Found Object Art from it’s half-century long stasis as a largely decorative, non-critical, nostalgic hobbyist’s pursuit wherein a mindless approximation of historic artists work dominates. Moreover we feel that as an urgent initial measure to mitigate this crisis, it is critical to call for a cessation of the use by the illegitimate practitioners of the Found Object genre of the following found materials and themes which constitute the fundamental cause of their wrong doing:

Bilateral symmetry, shrines, time pieces, burnt or abused baby dolls, alters, alphabet blocks, tonic bottles, test tubes, beakers, bifocals, Buddhas, buttons, butterflies, bicycles, broken baroque picture frame fragments, foreign currency, feathers, paper ephemera, enlarged letter forms, fake flowers, flags, old wood scraps, maps, cracked vanity mirrors, memory boxes, mannequin hands, gears, Gibson Girls, gods’ eyes, spice grinders, and assorted antique appliances, postage stamps, anatomical and astrological charts, heart forms, playing cards, cartography, candles, Kabala, corks, crescent moons, spoons, runes, reliquaries, memory boxes, locks of hair, rusted antique hardware, sea shells, sheet music, eye masks, sepia-toned photos, lithographic postcards, cupids, putti, test tubes, rusted old tools, spools, skeleton keys, coins, teacups, keepsakes, Taro cards, chess pieces, alarm clocks, skulls, Art Noveau, soiled Scrabble tiles, valentines, old dice, quill pens, ink bottles, bells, bird cages, angels, tobacco pipes, movable type, eyeballs, light bulbs, bones, bottle caps, alchemical apparatus, cracked driftwood, doll house furniture, turned wooden dowels, taxidermy, torn tickets and wings of any kind.

Stephen:

Thanks for getting in touch! The original photo from Eric and Eugene's early days together came courtesy of the couple from their own collection. The "today" photo was taken by former Oregonian staff photographer Ross Hamilton.

I may still have an active email address for Eric. If so, I will pass this along to him along with your note.

Cheers!

-- Jennifer

Stephen - Thank you for the beautiful photo collage of Eugene and me.

It is almost 2 weeks since the second anniversary of his death. I've had an emotional and instructive two years which promise even more unexpected teachings and experiences his departure triggers. I am blessed by having many friends with whom I can speak honestly when they inquire about how I am. I can honestly say "I am very happy and I cry a lot."
My friends understand.

When well-meaning strangers ask, I say exactly the same but add :

For two thousand years the churches have told us:
"You people are not allowed to love one another.
You are not capable of loving one another.
You people can fall into lust,
but
you are intrinsically incapable of loving one another.

And we have many philosophical reasons to prove it."

Then I say:

"When the grief sweeps through me,

I welcome it. Eugene's absence

is now his presence.

And when the grief sweeps through,

I am healed in my very cells - healed from the lies we have been told.

And when I share this with my LGBT brothers and sisters

it contributes to healing them of the lies they too have been told."

Stephen - Thank you for your wonderful photo collage. Above all, thank you for the human kindness you share by means of it.

Information: the picture of us as aged was done by the Oregonian photographer. The youthful photo was by a black Chicago musician/photographer in 1955. Name not recalled. He was older than we were, so he's likely gone.

Again thank you.
Eric Marcoux

Dear Eric:

I can't begin to express how touched I was to receive your email this morning. I think I can count on one hand the number of instances the moments where such a sense of the beauty for the potential within humanity has moved me personally. Your words and strength and dignity and abiding love: a monument of sorts, really.

Thank you. I am also amazed how quickly all coalesced between the creating of the image, reaching out to Jennifer and then your response, occurred.

If it is OK with you I would like to share this story in a couple of small places where I post online, my Google account and a space at an International Society for Collage Artists.

Stephen -

Thank you for your rapid response. That is what makes communication such a delight for me.

Feel free to share whatever you want with others. The back story to this remark is this: In the 70s, the local conservative newspaper asked us to be part of a three-part series on Gay Men, Gay Women, and Gay Teachers. We were interviewed as a couple. A full page. Big photo. Excellent article. We were scared. I was used to publicity as a new artist in the community, but the gay identity NOT. So we were scared.

Other than two rude phone calls, we were received very well. We were never scared again.

The Oregonian did a much later extended article about our 40th anniversary, and also our 50th. The religion section covered the 40th, because we were married in a Zen Buddhist temple. Ditto re the 50th. As I said, we were never shy again.

I learned, through these experiences, to be willingly visible whenever possible. My life has been - IS blessed

- by role models who are also willing to be visible. I/we never had much money, but we have had this willingness to be visible instead.

So, share whatever you wish. (For an adapted introvert, I do really well with people.)

Best wishes,
Eric

This is a voyage into the world of Assemblage Art that you may find useful in the sorting through materials that may be used in three dimensional ‘Junk or Found Art’. In the world of ‘Common Objects’ and elements, we find that they can be transformed into a representational art form. There are certain modes of construction and cohesion in the relational paths that bring you to a finished piece of work.

What may look like a series of broken pieces in front of you will ultimately grow to become an ‘Assemblage’. As with much art there is a series of readjustments, while at other times there may be simultaneous harmony where everything comes into play quite rapidly. Usually though, it is through time, making your own methods along the way, or by using adaptations that are already in use by a host of related influences. Also it is through time and through some patience, trial and error that you find a unified coherence of composition. Oftentimes mistakes in the joining of objects that are different can lead you on a new path creating a ‘happy’ mistake. This is the adventure in the evolution of the making of assemblage art, like a poetic development.

The way the process begins is through inspiration of found/ discarded objects and by continually moving them around and abstracting them into what ultimately may be a unified body. No assemblage is started with a clear view of what the finished piece will look like. After much fussing and labor, common objects begin to form the dynamic of a certain cohesion with a new life for these discards. In order to enhance the identity of a found object the item is often deconstructed and taken to it’s various parts.

Also, it should be said, whole object forms may be used unaltered when good placement may be achieved. By deconstructing you possibly lose all vision as to what the item had been, now being a component of your assemblage art. Conversely the whole object may be used when it may be a critical focus piece within your structure. Putting yourself in the role of a spectator can help the visualization process leading from randomness of dispersed objects to the discovery of a cohesion of a newly created ensemble.

These altered variations are filled with color, depth, texture and reflections. They also can convey a meaningful dialog.

Possibly the viewer sees familiar objects (perhaps now unrecognizable) that have been altered with a new take where these objects have transformed the bounds of their original use, thus taking the viewer to another place in consciousness with the ability to enrich our lives. Michael Wilson

It was 1937 when the poem was first published. Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a world where racism was finally a thing of the past? "Strange Fruit" remains relevant as human rights abuses due to all forms of prejudice still occur globally. It goes without saying, I don't have the greatest voice, and when singing the words I felt as if my throat was going to close over, but I somehow managed to get this choked croak out nevertheless, a strange lullaby for all god's children who go to sleep in a world most of us do want to be more peaceful and better.

I'm not sure, when neurons are firing, and dopamine etc. is running through the system if the more hands-on tactile approach of collage/mixed media actually has a stronger healthier release and thus, creates stronger art. (See latest example below). I suppose I am fortunate that I live at a time and in a society where I have the luxury of pondering such, and perhaps the main, the ultimate, point here should be gratitude that we have this online International Society to share the struggles, triumphs, doubts and questions about making any sort of art at all.

So I've started a funding campaign at www.hatchfund.org/project/in_and_out

If you get a moment, take a look at the video a friend of mine in San Francisco put together for me. If anyone here can pass this along to fellow artists an organizations, I'd be grateful. There are perks in the campaign, too!

Thanks! :)

Some paint with light. Others use words. Stephen Mead does both. A multimedia artist and author known for his color collages and poems, Mead recently added music and sound to give new life to his work. The result is his new CD, Threnody for a Forgotten Plague, a collection of sung poems of lament dealing with the pain, suffering and loss brought by the early days of the AIDS pandemic.

Being familiar with Mead’s visual artwork and books, I could only wonder about his decision of working with music. So I gave him a call to find out.

“It had a long time in hibernation, before I actually worked out the guts to give it a shot,” Mead says, explaining that the idea for Threnody started several years ago, when he was asked to record a few of his poems for a radio station. To make it more interesting, Mead tried to record his poems using music as background. But, as he opened his manuscripts to select the poems, he remembered how he’d first heard the verses, being sung, in his mind.

It took Mead several more years to turn the idea of recording his poems as songs into reality. At first, he would approach musicians and vocalists to sing his poems. When nobody showed interest, Mead decided to do it himself. So, he began the long process of finding free sounds and music, and pairing them with his poems.

“That took a lot of listening,” Mead says. “It’s like when I worked in a collage medium, [and] placed the colors next to each other to see if they worked together. I would just do it with sounds. I love music, and painted a lot [while listening to] music.”

Mead considers Threnody a work-in-progress. The CD is an emotional exploration, a compilation of poems written before the advent of HAART regimens, some verses inspired by his work in the hospital, as a caregiver for HIV patients.

“Love ballads are some of my favorite pieces,” Mead comments, talking about Threnody songs. “‘Buddy [for Leonard Matlovich]’ is one of my favorites, dealing with a war veteran. I think I was listening or reading an article about this veteran. He had lost a lover…this was before Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, when people could still be discharged [outright].” Another track, “He Fills the Window,” is a love song that takes the listener to the early days of the epidemic, and to the pain associated, then, with an HIV-positive diagnosis.

Track 13, “Building Immunities,” was recently awarded top prize in the poetry category for this magazine’s annual Christopher Hewitt Award and was featured in the August 2014 issue. Here is an excerpt:

Forgetting regret,
in depths of slumber I dreamed,
river-willed, stirring stillness:
you again, you—

But time has changed the face of AIDS. Today, we may find ourselves caught between a painful past, defined by the plague of the early eighties, a present marked by undetectable status and functional cures, and an optimistic future of a generation free of AIDS. So maybe it’s only normal to question the importance of keeping that past alive.

Stephen Mead believes that it is important to remember the history of AIDS, as it is important to remember any aspect of history, including the long and ongoing fight for equal rights. “When I first came to terms with being a gay person,” he says, “I’d done a lot of reading. I think it’s important to know what others went through in order for me to have the privileges I have now, [when] gay marriages are becoming more prevalent.” Same goes for the AIDS pandemic. It is important to remember, so that it’s not repeated. “Even though we have these new ways of treating AIDS, of living with AIDS [today],” he adds, “and we should be thankful for it, [AIDS] is still a serious condition. It hasn’t gone away.”

Hi All,

We're starting to work on having stuff for sale for raising funds to operate the museum programs (this website included that costs about 250.00 a year) The rents are expensive in Santa Fe and we have a pretty big space, about 2,000 square feet housing and exhibiting the archives containing thousands and thousands of works.

The cost is about 2,500.00 a month out of pocket for rent, utilities, internet, etc. (Not very sustainable out of my own pocket.) We'll be running the museum most of the time but will operate a commercial gallery during the tourist season with invited artists which is roughly June through October. We are also setting up an online fundraiser store for the museum. Currently there is only one item: a museum postcard with collage materials from my studio in a clear envelope. Mostly scraps from my collage table used in making my own collages. More stuff to buy coming soon.

Help us beta test our process of selling and shipping for the next 30 days: Buy a small one and we'll send a bigger one instead, buy a big one and we'll throw in an extra small one (and a few additional things besides).
