They Whom the Gods Love Die Young

I traveled to Europe last fall for my 20th wedding anniversary. We went to the Terezin concentration camp in the Czech Republic, where my husband took numerous photographs of the sobering site. I picked up the rock and feathers on the grounds, because I knew I would want to commemorate the day and the feelings it aroused in me. Later, we were in Potsdam, Germany, and I found the cracked photo of the woman at a street arts fair. She was destined to become part of this assemblage. I hand-colored the photo of this bloc from Terazin, then added the photo, along with a strand of pearls that had been my mother's, in an old box I found at a local antique store. I added the stone and feathers and some copper tulle for a feeling of depth.
